How to calculate concrete yards and bags

Concrete is bought by volume. A reliable estimate keeps feet, inches, cubic feet, cubic yards, and bag yield in the correct order.

Core equationFor a rectangular slab: length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = cubic yards before allowance.

Start with finished dimensions

Measure the inside dimensions of the forms, not the outside of the project area. Check thickness in more than one place. A four-inch slab over a level base is a different volume from a slab averaging five inches because the excavation is uneven.

Calculate thickened edges, grade beams, steps, or footings as separate shapes and add their volumes. This makes the estimate easier to audit and reduces the chance of counting the same section twice.

Convert inches before cubic yards

Thickness is often recorded in inches while length and width are in feet. Divide inches by 12 before multiplying. Once you have cubic feet, divide by 27 because one cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

Bags versus a truck

Typical published yields are about 0.30 cubic feet for a 40 lb bag, 0.45 for a 60 lb bag, and 0.60 for an 80 lb bag. Divide the adjusted cubic feet by the exact yield on the product label and round up.

A ready-mix supplier may round to a minimum increment and charge for a short load. Ask about access, unloading time, washout, delivery fees, and whether the quoted quantity already includes an allowance.

  • Use bags for small, manageable placements.
  • Compare total bag weight and mixing time before choosing DIY mixing.
  • Never add water beyond the product specification just to make placement easier.

What the calculator cannot decide

Slab thickness, concrete strength, reinforcement, joints, base preparation, drainage, curing, and frost requirements are design decisions. Confirm them with the plans, local code, supplier, and responsible professional before ordering.
