How to calculate gravel volume
Multiply length by width and convert the depth from inches to feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. Add allowance for uneven grade, compaction, and handling before ordering.
- Measure separate rectangles and add them together.
- Use the compacted depth required by the project, not the loose pile height.
- Ask the quarry or landscape supplier for the density of the exact product.
Why tons are only an estimate
A cubic yard describes space; a ton describes weight. Washed stone, crushed limestone, pea gravel, and recycled base do not weigh exactly the same. The calculator starts at 1.4 tons per cubic yard, but lets you replace that assumption with the supplier’s figure.
Base preparation changes the order
Geotextile, excavation depth, drainage, and compaction affect performance more than adding extra stone at the end. Use this result as a purchase estimate, then confirm the section and compaction requirements for the actual project.
