How the sheet count works
The calculator finds the four-wall area, subtracts typical door and window areas, and adds the ceiling if selected. After the waste factor is applied, total area is divided by the selected sheet area and rounded up.
- 4×8 sheet: 32 sq ft.
- 4×10 sheet: 40 sq ft.
- 4×12 sheet: 48 sq ft.
Fewer sheets can mean heavier handling
Longer panels can reduce joints on long, straight walls, but they are heavier and need enough clearance to move into the room. Plan sheet orientation and seams against actual framing before using area alone to choose a size.
Materials beyond the board
A complete takeoff may include screws, joint tape, compound, corner bead, backing, insulation, and specialty panels. Moisture, fire, impact, sound, and tile-backup requirements can change the assembly.
