Round after adding wasteCalculate net area, add a layout-specific waste factor, divide by coverage per box, and round up to a whole box.
Measure the actual floor
Break an L-shaped or irregular floor into rectangles and add the areas. Measure through doorways and closets that receive the same flooring. Do not use the home’s advertised square footage for a room-level order.
- Straight layouts in simple rooms often start near 7–10% waste.
- Diagonal or patterned layouts may need 12–15% or more.
- Keep replacement material when a product may be discontinued.
Use the coverage printed on the box
Nominal plank or tile dimensions do not always produce a convenient box total. Enter the manufacturer’s stated square-foot coverage so the result rounds to complete packages you can actually purchase.
Underlayment is a separate takeoff
Underlayment, vapor control, adhesive, trim, transitions, fasteners, and floor preparation need their own coverage and compatibility checks. This calculator estimates only the finished flooring quantity.
