How the deck-board estimate works
The calculator converts deck width to inches and divides it by the installed coverage of one board: actual board width plus the planned gap. It rounds up to a full row, then divides deck length by stock-board length and rounds up again for each row.
Linear footage is the number of rows multiplied by deck length. The adjustable allowance is applied after the basic layout so the added material remains visible.
- Measure actual board width, not the nominal name.
- Use the installed gap required by the product and fastening system.
- Confirm that the selected stock length can be transported and installed on the site.
Joints and picture framing change the count
A deck longer than the stock board requires joints or a planned breaker board. Random joints, stagger rules, picture-frame borders, diagonal layouts, stairs, and fascia create a different cut plan than a simple rectangular field.
Use the result as a baseline, then sketch the board layout and add border or stair boards as separate runs.
Structure and fastening are separate
Joist size and spacing, spans, beams, footings, guards, stairs, ledger attachment, lateral loads, corrosion resistance, and fastener schedules are not determined by surface-board quantity.
